Running for a cause!
In addition to bringing a 12-person together, Pascale also decided to dedicate this race to a cause that she and her husband, Ted Caplow, already support - University of Miami's Pediatric Residency Program in Haiti. The program will train a class of 6-8 residents over a three year period. These residents will receive a specialized curriculum that includes the treatment and care of critically ill pediatric patients as well as prevention strategies for pediatric health and safety. Hospital Bernard Mevs has partnered with St. Damien’s and the University of Notre Dame to execute this program.
“A lot of children in Haiti do not have care and the mortality rate is very high. I want to help kids and reduce this mortality rate. I chose this program because Hospital Bernard Mevs and St. Damien’s offer the most up-to-date, best quality, care.”
Child mortality in Haiti is not far behind numbers associated with sub-Saharan Africa. It is well known that many of the deaths that occur are preventable. In Haiti, 380 doctors graduate every year for a population of over 9 million people; 4.9 million of those people are children. By focusing on evidence based medicine and one on one supervision with experienced pediatricians, HBM and Hospital St. Damian's have joined forces to create a residency training program in Pediatrics to increase the number of competent pediatricians to serve the country's needs. Your tax deductible donation will be directly responsible for aiding Project Medishare's mission for capacity building.
Currently, there are only 2.6 doctors for every 10,000 people in Haiti.
By providing the opportunity for higher education, this program would not only graduate the pediatric specialists necessary for the management of complicated illness in children across the country, but also contribute to the retention of these physicians in Haiti.
The program's focus on emergency and critical care sets them apart from existing pediatric training programs and it will serve to improve the critical care skills of physicians that come through the program. In addition, this program serves as an opportunity to improve Haiti’s standing in pediatric health care in alignment with the Millennium Development Goals.
